The past few months have been some kind of whirlwind for various reasons. Is summer like that for anyone else? But today I’m sharing with you one of the best experiences (and batshit crazy by some people’s standards – ahem husband ahem) that’s happened this summer. I attended Mario Dedivanovic’s The Master Class with my college bestie and her medical residency bestie, and it was incredible!!! Prior to going, I only shared the news with people that could truly understand how amazing this event was going to be because a lot of people just didn’t understand. And I get it, I do. If you told me you were flying across the country to check out Comic Con, I really wouldn’t get it. But I’d be happy for you. Maybe it’s a Virginia thing, but telling people you were flying to California to take a make-up class met all kinds of reactions – some rude, some ridiculous, some totally bizarre. To each his own I guess, but I’m here to tell you it was worth every penny.
Irene picked us up at the airport and whisked us away to Laguna Beach to begin our whirlwind trip. We went to Laguna fricking Beach guys. I could hear the soundtrack from The Hills playing in the background as soon as we stepped out of the car. We grabbed dinner overlooking the Pacific with views unlike any I’ve ever seen. California is beautiful; I can understand the appeal.
The views only got more insane as we stayed in Rancho Cucamonga. Could you imagine waking up to this view every morning? In addition to the California views, we were also welcomed with a Saturday morning earthquake! And I guess a visit to California wouldn’t be complete without a dog bite…from a Chihuahua with a serious Napoleon complex mind you, on our morning walk. Now I know why they call these things ankle biters. It’s true! The morning may have started off pretty rocky, but the afternoon more than made up for it!
The event was held at the Pasadena Civic Center, and getting there on time was key to getting through the line to your seats. He started his class a little after 12:00, and there were ladies and gents still in line trying to make their way into the auditorium. Most people I talk with after the fact were blown away at how many people attended the class. Most of Mario’s classes have been smaller and more intimate with this class maybe being one of the largest. What blew me away the most? Over half the audience had traveled internationally to attend!
We had great seats, sitting amongst some of the most beautiful women ever. We met Mario’s mom (photo above) and had another celeb sighting with Ashley Tisdale attending the class. The reigning queen of all that is eyebrows was in attendance too, Ms. Anastasia of Beverly Hills. I think we were all secretly hoping more of Kim’s family would surprise the audience, including Caitlyn.
Mario doesn’t always use Kim as his model, but for this master class she was the main attraction. First impressions of Kim when she walked on the stage? She is ridiculously tiny! You see those curves and think something totally different, but in person she’s so petite. And her skin without make-up is flawless. Some of us wish we could look as good as she does make-up free with make-up! Her baby bump was adorable and yes, her backside is a force all its own people. Mario was softspoken, very polite and the rapport between he and Kim was that of old friends that have known each for years and years. He has been doing her make-up for almost 10 years! By chance he was her make-up artist on this one fated day years ago, the stars aligned and she’s taken him alongside her ever since! He is truly an artist, and you get to experience that during the entire time. He holds the make-up brushes like a painter would hold paint brushes. He studies Kim’s face just like an artist studying a canvas. For those that don’t understand make-up at all, it is living art.
The class lasted about five hours, so it was pretty long. Part of that was due to all of the questions being asked by the audience. And hey, I think it’s great to have that open discussion as Mario was performing his magic. It enhanced the learning experience as tried and true make-up artists were asking him for tips and tricks. But at the same time, it also drug the event out, especially when the same question was asked three and four times! I took 18 pages of notes which come out to on average about 42 different steps in this make-up process! I sorta chuckled when Mario started the class saying this would be a great look for non make-up artists to wear to work. Sigh….if only I had that kind of time in the morning! What I love about this before and after shot of Kim is you can clearly see the differences contouring makes. And I don’t think he went crazy with the contouring at all, as we were initially expecting. It was a very light application of bronzer and highlighter.
The level you purchased determined where you sat at the event and the kind of goodie bag you were given (more to come on that later this week!) Unbeknownst to us when we purchased tickets, the Gold ticket purchasers also received a group photo with Kim and Mario! Platinum level received an individual photo with both, but due to our ability to push our way through the crowd, ending up behind the two of them together was definitely better than waiting in the long line for your selfie. This will sound totally creeper, but I touched her! I mean, she was right there in front of me…how could I not?! They were pretty strict about photos of Kim, but Betsy would not be deterred. She snapped her little heart out after the group photo as security was yelling and coming straight for her.
When we exited the event, we were handed our make-up swag bag. When you purchased the ticket, it said you’d also receive a goodie bag with over $1000 of make-up products inside. We’ve all received goodie bags like this before, right? You might get one full-sized lipstick and the rest comes in either mini sizes of the product or samples. I personally didn’t have the highest expectations of what this bag would hold. I was so wrong. I don’t even have room for everything we received. I was blown away. Almost everything used during the event on Kim was in the bag! A few are smaller, mini sized versions, but for the most part they are full sized products from MAC, Benefit, Tatcha, Anastasia of Beverly Hills…the list goes on friends. With that bag in hand, the three of us skipped back to the car like we’d won the lottery. When we got back, we all sat on the floor and dug in to see the goods just like kids do opening presents on Christmas morning. I think the bag was better than Christmas morning! It all made it back to the East coast safely, thank goodness. I’ll be sharing some of my favorites with you all later this week!
I guess if you’ve made it this far, you might be salivating for some of Mario’s tips. He doesn’t use primer – none on the face, eyelids…anywhere. He prefers the make-up to sit into the skin vs. stay on top of something else. He’s a huge fan of using the beauty blender sponges. He blended and blended and blended until I was dizzy. In order to blend the make-up well, the face needs to be moisturized with something very emollient or any loose powder you put on will just sit and become cakey throughout the day. He’s also a fan of applying creams first and then powders or liquids. With eyeshadow, he would first apply something cream based and then follow that up with powder eyeshadow in a similar shade. He also did the same with under eye concealer – he first applied a very creamy concealer and then applied one that was more liquid based. One of his favorite translucent setting powders for everything – under the eyes, on the face – was Porefessional Powder by Benefit. Kim also listed at the end a few of her favorite nude lipcolors – Seduction by Charlotte Tilbury and another from her line in Bardot Beige.
While I don’t think being a make-up artist is written in my cards, the tips received were invaluable and for the most part, easy to implement into your day-to-day application. For me, it was great being around other creative people, even for a short amount of time. I do wish the event would have been a bit different so there was time for socializing and meeting new people. I would have loved to talked with the lady attending from Nigeria or Kuwait! Incredible, right? You can check out more photos of the event on Mario and Kim’s website and also find out about upcoming classes. If you are make-up obsessed and have even the tiniest girl crush on Kim K., you’ll love it!
