What to Wear: Winter to Spring Transition

With such a lovely weekend in the books of sunshine and warmer weather, my mind is starting to focus entirely on Spring! I’ve picked up a few things on my Spring wish list already with this gorgeous jumpsuit waiting for its debut along with a few pretty baubles. But my favorite part about this transition into Spring is taking my Winter pieces and finding new ways to incorporate them into my Spring wardrobe. I stopped doing that whole closet change-around a few years ago, you know the one. You rotate out your sweaters for your sun-worshiping duds, stuffing them away in tubs to never be seen again until the first sign of fall. You don’t need to do that anymore! You can maximize your wardrobe through Spring and keep yourself wearing your Winter favorites as long as you can….I promise! And if you don’t have any of the items below, they make for great, classic and timeless additions to your closet for years to come.

The Utility Jacket (mine from Forever21):
A little bit rugged but still full of style, the utility jacket is outerwear you need for spring! During the cold months, I tossed my jacket on over light-weight sweaters, sweatshirts and summer dresses I winterized with tights and boots. Taking that same idea and same summer dresses, adding a belt over the jacket and tossing on a pair of high-heeled sandals makes this one of my favorite looks each spring.

The Striped Top (mine from h&m):
If you didn’t know, stripes are the new neutral. They go with anything, and you can wear stripes of any kind all year long. Leopard print, in my mind, is also both a neutral and wardrobe necessity. But we’ll save that discussion for a later post! Over the winter, my striped top was a must-have layering piece. For the spring, instead of heavy layers of sweaters and cardigans, I’ll be pairing my striped shirt with my favorite light-weight leather jacket, my destroyed boyfriend denim and leopard print heels.

The Open Weave or Fisherman’s Sweater (mine from Old Navy):
I picked this sweater up from Old Navy a few winters ago on a whim, and since then, it’s become a wardrobe staple. I probably wear it once a week! In the winter I’m belting it over maxi dresses, tossing it on with jeans and leather pants, and wearing it with everything from a basic black skirt to one with sequins. In the spring, I love pairing it with more of my “frilly” skirts – lace, florals and my bright colored midis. I love this deep emerald skirt from J.Crew, and while it would look lovely with a pair of heels, I’m oh so partial to my Louie boots.

The Chambray Shirt (mine from J.Crew):
If there’s one item you need in your closet, it’s the Chambray shirt. If seeing it brings about visions of the ol’ Canadian tuxedo or makes you think straight up cowboy, erase those visions from your mind immediately! This shirt does it all. In the winter it’s my favorite layering piece aside from my stripes. I’m wearing it under a sweater, over my striped shirt, tucked into or belted over most of my skirts….it’s perfect! And in the spring and summer, it makes its debut all over again. I love these cute, printed pants. And yes, those are silver oxfords! Adorable!

Another reason I picked these four items? You can mix and match all four pieces all year long. In fact, you could technically layer all of them!
